How do I make my divorce less contentious?

On Behalf of | Jan 5, 2022 | Divorce

Let’s face it, divorce can be a difficult undertaking for anyone. Most people cannot fathom the thought of divorce for understandable reasons: Divorce is both emotionally and financially taxing.

But, divorce does not have to be contentious. It is possible for a divorcing couple to dissolve their marriage without turning it into a battle.

When it is apparent that your marriage is over, you can make a conscious decision to make the divorce process as smooth as possible. This is not to say that you have to give up your rights or let your soon-to-be-ex have their way in everything.

Here are a few tips that can help you make your divorce as amicable as possible:

Get help from a therapist

Most people believe they can withstand the divorce fatigue on their own. However, it is important to appreciate that divorce is a significant life event and there is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking help if you are getting overwhelmed.

A therapist can help you come up with the tools that you need to cope with the stress of divorce. If you have children, this can be a crucial step for developing the emotional resilience you need to help your kids adjust to their new normal as well.

Set clear boundaries

It is not unusual for a divorcing couple to want to live separately during the divorce process. Even if you can afford to move out, however, it is important to understand that such a decision can have a huge impact on the outcome of your divorce.

That being said, if you are sharing a living space with your future ex-spouse, be sure to set proper boundaries that will help you navigate the divorce process appropriately. You need to establish “house rules,” just like you would with a roommate.

Divorce can take its toll on anyone. If you are in the process of dissolving your marriage, it is in your best interest to do everything you can to make your divorce less contentious. The long-term dividends are worth it.
